How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

Dr. Khurana uses a combination of the Sciton Contour TRL™ and Profractional™ Laser to create customized laser resurfacing treatment plans for her patients. Our unique treatment protocol uses the settings of our laser technologies to specifically enhance facial rejuvenation.

The Profractional™ Laser works by creating thousands of microchannels in the skin, causing the body to begin its natural healing process and produce fresh collagen and elastin. The Profractional™ Laser does not treat the entire surface of the skin, but rather, it leaves bridges of tissue intact between the microchannels, allowing more comfortable treatment and faster recovery times.

The Sciton Contour TRL™ is a resurfacing laser that carefully removes the topmost layer of the skin to reveal new, supple skin underneath. As the laser gently vaporizes the epidermis, it also uses heat energy to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin deeper in the skin. The Sciton Contour TRL™ treats the entire skin’s surface, improving the appearance of the whole treated area.

By combining the technology of the Profractional™ and Sciton Contour TRL™ lasers, Dr. Mona Khurana has a substantial amount of versatility in the treatments she performs. She is able to customize every skin resurfacing treatment to best address each individual’s skin concerns and provide them with the results they desire.

Learn More About Laser Skin Resurfacing

Prior to your laser skin resurfacing treatment, you will have an in-depth consultation with Dr. Khurana to discuss all of your questions and devise your treatment plan. Your treatment plan will be considerate of your goals, timeline, and budget.

On the day of your appointment, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treated area to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. While most treatments are performed on the face, other common areas include the neck, chest, and hands.

Once the area has been sufficiently numbed, Dr. Khurana will treat your skin with a customized combination of the Profractional™ and Sciton Contour TRL™ lasers. You may feel some heat as the lasers are working, as well as a feeling similar to a gentle rubber band snap. You may request the use of nitrous oxide or Pronox to further improve your patient experience.

The length of your laser skin resurfacing session depends on your unique treatment plan and the size of the area, but most patients can expect a total treatment time between 30 and 45 minutes.

After your laser skin resurfacing treatment, you can expect to have a moderate to extensive downtime while your skin begins its natural healing process. You will experience some redness, swelling, and tenderness in the treated area for approximately five to ten days after treatment. As the skin recovers, it may also temporarily become dry and discolored.

Depending on the extent and intensity of the treatment, you will have downtime that may require that you take up to one week off from social activities and work engagements. While the majority of the healing process takes place in the first week, swelling and skin changes can persist for longer. After one week, you should be able to return to most of your usual activities, depending on your comfort level and personal preference for social interactions.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments can improve the appearance of the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin discoloration and
  • pigmentation concerns
  • Textured skin
  • Skin laxity
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Acne and acne scars

The results from our customized laser skin resurfacing treatments are dramatic, and many people will only require one treatment to achieve their skin goals. However, depending on your unique circumstances, a series of multiple treatments may be recommended.

Some skin changes, such as redness or mild to moderate hyperpigmentation, can result from treatments. With aggressive acne scarring or texture resurfacing protocols, the development of pigment and redness is often a trade off for textural improvement. This may require the use of other lasers, such as the Forever Young BBL™ or Moxi® laser.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments produce long-lasting results and change the trajectory and development of future aging concerns. By undergoing periodic laser treatments, patients can alter the trajectory of their skin’s aging and create more vibrant, youthful skin.

As our laser skin resurfacing treatments are versatile and customizable, a wide variety of men and women will make excellent candidates. However, you are not a candidate if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have active acne, rash, or infection within areas to be treated.

You may be an ideal candidate for laser skin resurfacing if you are a younger patient who desires routine skin maintenance and preventative care for skin aging. Older patients also make excellent candidates, and laser skin resurfacing can be a great minimally-invasive alternative to more invasive anti-aging procedures.

To find out if laser skin resurfacing is the right treatment option for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Mona Khurana. During your consultation, she will create an in-depth treatment plan to specifically address your skin needs.

Please Note:

There may be some degree of swelling immediately post treatment. However, if you have excessive swelling or any of the following signs of infection, you should contact the office immediately at (778) 901-7596, or after hours you may email Dr. Mona Khurana at monakhurana@themelasmaclinic.com. For increased redness, swelling or uncontrolled pain please visit an after hours medical provider.

Signs of infection include:
  • Drainage that looks like pus
  • Progressive increase in warmth or pain at or around the treated area
  • Fever of 38.0 Celsius or greater

Please note that it takes over 24-48 hours for an infection to develop, so any increase in redness or warmth during the first two days is more likely related to the normal healing process than an infection. If in doubt, please contact the clinic.
